What a decent Gundams? NO WAI!

Thu Nov 16, 2006, 12:50 AM
Hey I'm back again with a new anime review.
Lot's been going on but to bullet point the highlights:

-school
-WoW
-WoW TCG
-Guilty Gear
-Hanging out with Bryan and Co.

Haven't had much time for anime, but I'm glad to report a series that was unexpectedly good:

GUNDAM SEED
------------------

Oh man, where do I start. This anime covers so many different genres I get confused trying to count them all. Between action, drama, suspense, and a tangle of relationships, Gundam Seed DOES deliver overall. I can't say it was my favorite anime, but it definitely shines above the other gundams. Oh yea, and the music is killer.

This is probably going to be a semi-long review, since the series is, in fact, 50 episodes long. The anime goes through tons of development and gets better over time; I'll be covering those phases and insert my opinions of each phase.

--> The Early Phase

The anime starts out pretty typically, you got your main character, Kira Yamato, and a ring of friends. They're in an idyllic scenery that is untroubled and pristine. That's till the badguys come along. From then on it's just a wild ride for Kira, piloting gundams, joining the earth's military force, fighting against Zaft, and even going against his close childhood friend, Asuran Zara. The plot is still pretty straightfoward: you expect some big clashes between the Naturals and the Coordinators in the future and a healthy rivalry between Kira and Asuran.

Lo and behold, Kira Yamato is a coordinator himself.

---> Where things start to look good

The love triangles are astounding. Kira falls for Frey, Frey rejects Sai, Kira meets Kagari: rivalry. One part that seems to bug me is what Frey means in all of this mess. She seems almost demented at the beginning of the anime...not sure what that meant. Kira begins to fight, but his purpose is still in question. He keeps on killing and regrets each kill he's made. Eventually, Asuran and Kira fight again. Kira kills one of Asuran's friends and Asuran kills one of Kira's friends and the heat is ON (Nicol dies and Millie's boyfriend, Tohru). This is where the plot really begins to take off (circa episode 30). Oh yea, and Kagari meets Asuran...they get a bit entwined.

---> Then the shit hits the fan

I don't even know where to start. This is just going to come out as a mess. Kagari and Kira are twins. Kira falls for Lux Klein. Frey is taken away by Raul la Fraga. Muruee falls for Mwu la Fraga. Asuran falls for Kagari. Things happen and things happen. Lux's father is killed, Kira wakes up after the fight with Asuran in Lux's home, Kagari and Kira lose their father at Orb. There's just so much that happens and the tangle of relationships grows deeper and more intimate.

And the final episodes. So many memorable moments that really capture the key phrase: "Gundam Seed is an anime about the tragedies of war, the atrocities of human nature, and the little things that matter in life." I'll list memorable moments...there's just no way I can make a coherent paragraph:

-Mwu La Fraga: sacrifices himself in front of the Archangel...in front of Muruee claiming to "make the impossible possible."
-Badgiruel: reflects on Muruee's sayings on being a captain and desides to sacrifice herself to take down the leader of the blue cosmos. She yells fire the same time Muruee does, nostalgia of times back on the archangel.
-Frey: THIS IS THE PART! after Kira promised to protect her back in like episode 15 or something, he has been HELLBENT on making this true. Just like the shuttle that was shot down, he rushes to protect it...and he does! He sees her face, her smiling face that was glad that he had protected her...and then the ship is shot to pieces by another laser. The ultimate crushing blow to Kira.

These memorable moments and more are what make Gundam Seed so special. That and the entertwined relationships. Overall this is probably a 7 of 10, or a B. It's definitely worth the watch, but nothing overly amazing.
